It is about our daily life and the folks we meet and greet amid the nature all around us. <br />
Over the past year or so we lost one of our favorite Italian restaurants in downtown Amelia: Pompeo's. It was a homey, comfortable place that its Napolianese Italian owner, Mario, imbued with his own friendly and outgoing personality. We loved the food. We loved meeting friends there as it was just right in size so noise was not a problem. Then it was gone.<br />
<br />
Then it was back!! <br />
Reincarnation!<br />
<br />

<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
Fitted with everything in a spanking new Food Truck (the first on the Island) Even a table and chairs where one could plant a candle and go formal.</div>

<br />
<br />
Peter's Point beach just moments away for us ! And moments away for beachcombers and sunbathers to grab a piazza or a full meal. You also may take a horseback ride along the beach before or after.<br />
<br />
One day our doing driving errands we saw the truck. Always ready for an island adventure, we followed along right to the beach. Mario recognized us and we had a reunion! Promised to come back the next day and taste what was on offer.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
My pictures look like they were taken in the 50's with their golden hue. It was a cloudy and breezy day. But, that did not stop us. We were on a mission....was Mario's food as good in a food truck as it had been in his restaurant? We put in our order, and it was cooked on the spot. We took it back into the car and as we are county residents drove onto the beach to enjoy the sound of the waves.<br />
<br />
Tailgating...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<br />
The food was wonderful...perhaps even better with the sea air along with it. This is a perfect venue when grandkids are visiting or even for takeout. Our recommendation is 5 Stars and we are glad to share the news! <br />
<br />
MARIO IS BACK!<br />

For us lucky denizens of this Island, it is only another face of our home showing a unique kind of beauty, a dreamy one that defines an island as off by itself, close by the mother land or far and away. My husband walks off to the end of a pier looking for little surprises be it close by or at a distance. As the fog came closer and then receded this beauty was revealed. The sun is starting to waken the day calling forth the shrimping boat on the right. Below is my favorite shot of the day. It could have been taken a hundred years ago when this Island was a very different place.<br />

I took the above photograph in the harbor and then revised it on an application revealing<br />
this spook catamaran and the lovely bird on its right. All of the photos in this post were taken by Yours Truly..<br />

On a island that once was the favorite haunt of pirates (historical fact and tales for another day) one turns to old ghost stories. So before the sun comes out I leave you with this...<br />

It says just what I want it to say-Christmastide has come to Amelia Island. No Black Friday for us: it is a blue and gold and red Friday with lots of tinsel and sea shells to show for it. Lights have been strung on pier posts and a message hung on light posts.... that message is one of peace.<br />

Our day after Thanksgiving is not one of rush and bustle. Matter of fact it is a fun day downtown with folks still dressed in their pajamas... If you are wearing pj's you get a 20% discount on your downtown Christmas shopping. Plus, you have a whole sleigh full of fun. It is a chilly day but it did not stop the fun and good humor. I think this year there were more grown-ups acting like children then the other way around. </div>

The shops are all decorated. Pajama clad and otherwise shoppers stroll slowly among other strollers. There is nothing that looks like an unhappy crowd. Shops offer free refreshment and around a corner Santa is set up to hear secret lists. Another corner and lo, a little band is setting up. A new charming toy store glistens and invites just across. Look to the end of the street and boats bob in the harbor.<br />

Another Christmas in Amelia for us, the ninth one. Each year the Christmas scene here delights and refreshes. No arguments on should if we should call it Christmas! You can bet your traveling elf, not a one. It is a traditional, if quirky season for us here in this southern town and it is all ours.</div>
<div>
Christmas is very precious here. We are reminded of it's real meaning, the sense of giving and caring. You can hear the ringing of the Salvation army bells manned by volunteers all over the Island and the sound of giving. If it turns cold our volunteer cold shelters are ready for the less fortunate. Amelia Island is a small town with a big heart especially at Christmas.</div>

Today it is a chilly 46 degrees but then tomorrow will be back in the 60's or 70's. See. here is a changing tree to prove it. One of the reasons we love the Island is that it has the seasons....without SNOW and ICE. This is great for us transplanted New Englanders!<br />

There is now a craft alley at the Farmer's Market in downtown Fernandina Beach and I was taken with this crafter's booth shared with her father's wood bowls. The shell candle holders are made of oyster shells and just lovely. The wooden bowls are carved from a particular type of tree that grows in our swamps here. The tree is beyond its time but the years have made fascinating shapes which are a crafter's dreams. </div>

We have said before that each time we wander downtown we experience a special moment! In this case, it was a treat. We have been waiting for Nana Teresa's Bake Shop<br />
to open at 31 S. 5th Street ever since we saw the sign go up.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
We had actually met Nana herself before the opening as our taste buds were urging</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
us down to see progress on the shop.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<br />
<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
We, we wait no more. Neither should you! This is such a welcome addition to our little Island, it brings a sense of chic class. You are in for deserts as you have never seen nor tasted ( of course, other than your Mom's). The treats are beautifully concocted and displayed but what they taste like is amazing. I am thinking Paris, folks, or the North End in Boston. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I have tasted delicacies in both places.</div>

Let me say, here, that none of my recommendations are paid advertisements...they are what we enjoy and it our pleasure to share with Islanders and Visitors both.<br />
My photos do not do Nana teresa's justice so please go see for yourselves....</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
See Nana Teresa's Facebook page where I found some of these photographs for lots more information. Nicely she is open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. <br />
You will appreciate the beautiful ambiance just as much as the delicacies!!</div>

Fortunate is the person who lives on a little island where the ocean surrounds our souls as well as our bodies. They sell recordings of the sounds of the sea!<br />

We are entering high season in Amelia, meaning summer, the beach and boats. The Shrimp Festival has come and gone, not affected by one rainy day. Tourists are everywhere. Those of us who live here retreat to our corners of beach and yard and hunker down to tend our gardens. New restaurants are opening yet to try. We work in the mornings and nap in the afternoon til the cool of evening. It is summer in the Southland, on a little island of beauty. Afternoon thunderstorms</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
break the heat and send us home to a good book. </div>

And then the sun comes out again.<br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
The song of the sea is not the only song heard by those of us living on the Island of Amelia.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
There is an abundance of birdsong filling the air. Recently, in my Internet wanderings, I came upon <i style="font-weight: bold;">The Fernandia Observer </i> an online publication sharing Island news. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
This video is from that publication and was taken by Bailey Strauss. It is simply beautiful. We have a bird bath, but no feeder in our back yard as it brings unwanted guests: namely peacocks who live nearby. I have never seen a Painted Bunting or an Indigo or Blue Grosbeak. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
But, as they are nearby, who knows…one of these days.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The quiet, still art of birdwatching, or watching the sea ebb and flow,</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
the art of living on an Island.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Though we are in Florida, we are way high north, almost in Georgia. They say you have to go this far north in Florida to find Southern culture! </div>
<br />
Thus, we have the seasons. Our winter is mild compared to other parts of the U.S., of course. Still we had a colder than usual winter season and welcome the warmer weather. Amelia celebrates by showing off her azalea finery. This year, probably because of the cold snaps, it is awesome. Take a look at the treasures in my neighbor's yard. Ours are a bit slower. It is like we have it timed.<br />
<br />

The new cover photo is one of my paintings. Inspired by the sea around us here,<br />
the sights and the sound of its tireless changing. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
A week or so ago we went off to explore the new walking/bike path on Big Talbot Island. Toward the end of our walk I retired to the car to sketch and my husband went on down to the ocean. This is what awaits explorers as they walk this more difficult path. </div>

A veritable graveyard of downed trees that have turned white in the sun. </div>

The history of this Island is an endless source of fascination for those willing to dig just below the surface, Take the story of the little Yellow House in the Historic District. </div>

<br />
How interesting, a tourist can mumble to themselves, as we did. Then promptly forgot about it.<br />
<br />
Sometime later, we were exploring the old Bosque Bello cemetery here when we came upon a neat little plot of grave markers that piqued our curiosity. It seemed to be the plot where nuns were laid to rest. We were now even more curious and found out a little more of their story.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
One of the things we noted was that two of the graves were those of young Sisters who had died the same day. This is one of them, Mother Marie Celenie Joubert age 32 years, the other was of Sister De Sales, age 22 years. In the first photo of the plot above their graves are next to each other on the right.<br />

</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
Finally, a docent neighbor who volunteers at our Amelia Island Museum of History directed me to someone there who would have me all the information I needed for this inspiring history. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
And that they did!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
The Sisters of St. Joseph, of the Order of our two Sisters and their other Sisters were based in Le Puy, France. At a request from a Bishop they had sent six Sisters to Jacksonville and then to the Island to teach the children. Eventually they resided at the little Yellow house and made it their convent. In 1877 the Sisters had made a retreat in Jacksonville when an epidemic of Yellow Fever began raging in the Jacksonville area and its environs including Amelia Island. Armed guards were posted to keep the entire area under quarantine.<br />
<br />
The sisters determined to return to the Island. Four of them did: Mother Celenie, Sister Marie de Sales, Sister Xavier and Sister Mary Louise. They found a "<i>desolated Fernandina, with empty homes and businesses and deserted streets. A peculiar odor filled the air perhaps from fumigation efforts. Not stopping at their house, they went immediately to the bedsides of the fever victims…." </i><br />
<i>"One Protestant doctor said, 'You have, my Sisters, more courage than a soldier on the battlefield."</i><br />
<br />
Note: The Island population at that time was 1600 people, 300 of whom were Catholics.<br />
1100 contracted the disease, 94 died.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
The epidemic raged on for 7 months. The disease is viral, carried and spread through mosquito bites of the female infected <i>Aeses Aegypti</i> mosquito or an uninfected carrier one. The disease seemed to hit port cities (such as Fernandina). The bilges of standing water were perfect breeding grounds.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The disease was often called Swamp Miasma or Yellow Jack as it would occur near marshy lowlands, another characteristic of Amelia Island. It had a propensity to strike adults in their prime and not children and the elderly. The incubation period, once bitten, was 2-3 days. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
If the victim did not fall ill, they were henceforth immune.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
A medical practice in those days was to place all four feet of a patient's bed in containers of water so as to keep vermin away. It was of course, a perfect breeding place for mosquitoes. If a patient survived the disease, they had lifelong immunity. Antibiotics had not been discovered, nor had the epidemiology of the disease been identified. Dr. Benjamin Rush, a physician during epidemics in Philadelphia finally isolated the cause of the disease. It would not be identified until the 20th century. Meanwhile, treatment consisted of purgatives, wine or champagne, and sometimes blood letting.<br />
<br />
From calmly teaching little ones, the sisters were thrust into the role of nurses and more. People on the Island panicked and, not understanding the disease, left dying and ill patients on the steps of the convent. The sisters nursed them, sewed their shrouds, and even buried the dead. They went house to house caring for people. It mattered not if they were white or back, or Catholic or not. They were tirelessly led by their superior, Mother Celenie. She, and her dear friend and Sister, Sr. De Sales, contracted the disease themselves, and although nearly all the Sisters fell ill at one time or another, only those two did not survive. They died 8 hours within each other and were buried within 2 hours of their deaths in the back yard of the Convent. Five other Sisters arrived just after the deaths of the Sisters. Those Sisters recalled that back at the Retreat in Jacksonville, on hearing of the epidemic in Fernandina, Sister Celenie had told another Sister there that she "would not see her again, but that they would meet again in heaven." The Sister also described Mother Celenie as <i>"having a celestial air about her."</i><br />
<span style="text-align: center;"><br /></span>
<span style="text-align: center;"> Here is a photograph of Mother Celenie. We do not have one of Sr. De Sales. </span><br />
<span style="text-align: center;"> If you visit the Parish Hall of St. Michael's Catholic Church on the Island,</span><br />
<span style="text-align: center;"> you can see all of the Sisters that were here at the time.</span><br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJXGgH4V_P0FcOKNMiBmX4w67skqTM2g4B6WyNe3UVR4DVYTpgITc1v5TrsmXwwxtV1ZW8_4o6l8q9N0RGg0el8aGSvcHTal1jihPg6uD2o7Me4AFRmXlCtvr1OJxx9ZnVB23SWu_euSg/s1600/best+sr+marie+celenie+joubert+.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJXGgH4V_P0FcOKNMiBmX4w67skqTM2g4B6WyNe3UVR4DVYTpgITc1v5TrsmXwwxtV1ZW8_4o6l8q9N0RGg0el8aGSvcHTal1jihPg6uD2o7Me4AFRmXlCtvr1OJxx9ZnVB23SWu_euSg/s1600/best+sr+marie+celenie+joubert+.png" height="400" width="275" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
The history of this heroic Island episode would be interesting enough. However, many, many years later when the Sisters were disinterred for burial in Bosque Bello the coffins were, of course, opened by an undertaker. He stated that the two women were exactly as they had been at the time of their deaths, no decomposition had taken place. Also, when he opened the coffins, there was an odor of roses. This indeed had been reported in the newspapers. Keep in mind at the time of their deaths there was no embalmment nor were the coffins other than pine or some common wood.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
In the annals of Island history this one stands out as a story of heroism. We cannot go by the little Yellow House without thinking of those brave women. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The history of our Island is deep and interesting. I hope to share more of it.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
……………….<br />
<br />
Some of this information was gleaned from literature (newspaper articles, etc) and excerpts from The Diary of Sister Catherine, a St. Joseph's Sister, and from the online source below. Another Sister, Sister Rose of Lima, died in Jacksonville of Yellow Fever also during the epidemic. Thanks to the Amelia Island Museum of History for their help.<br />

Our two favorite restaurants here happen to be ethnic. One was now open for lunch! <b> Ciao </b>is truly a taste of Italy. We had yet to discover how much of an "Italiano" day it was going to be though when we decided to take a breather from errands.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
Luca, owner with his wife Kim, greeted us personally, as always, and soon we were seated at our table. As we entered a sweet space of relaxation we noticed that the young couple seated behind us were chatting happily in Italian. The sound was delightful and the music of it brought us back to memories of our trip to Italy long ago.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
Ciao is a place where one can enjoy wonderful food, friendship and, in general, people watching. As readers know, that is one of my pastimes. Always a joy…Ciao.<br />

We have known Luca since we came to the Island, eight years ago. We watched him as he and his wife planned their career until finally: CIAO was born. They are good friends.<br />

But, my Italian sojourn was not yet over. Typical of Amelia Island to have another </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
surprise up its sleeve.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
The next morning, I went to my favorite consignment shop. I needed to find some winter clothes to warm me during an unseasonal cold spell. Here below is Barb. owner of <b>BUY GONES</b>, a delight of a shop in many ways. Others think so, too, as you can see:<br />
<br />
<b> Best Amelia Consignment Shop 2013!</b><br />
<br />
There I was wandering through clothing goodies when in walked a couple shivering on this cold day.<br />
When I looked up: lo and behold, the couple from Ciao! They commenced to speak Italian to Barb, imagine: also Italian! Turns out they were in Amelia to be married that afternoon! Good wishes all around. I even found lots of lovely clothes on top of it all! <br />
<br />
Barb is a great fundraiser, too, another reason to frequent her shop. All part of the unique experience of Amelia Island on a cold Saturday morning. Thanks, Barb, I will be back!<br />

Wishing all who read and enjoy this little island blog a wonderful 2014. Amelia Island continues to surprise and welcome all who come to its shores. But, wherever you may be the Island Mentality is there for you….close your eyes and take a deep breath, and imagine you are on your own special Island. Come on it, the water is fine!!!<br />
<br />
We have just returned from a very big city with its inherent noise and traffic. A huge sigh as we return to our home and listen to the surf sing us to sleep at night.<br />

Every weekend there is something to see, to enjoy. Last weekend was the well known Christmas Home Tour, many of our victorian beauties decorated in period finery with innkeepers to match. We wandered down to the Farmer's market on Saturday morning. Parking right in front of the imposing Methodist church we noticed some doings there.<br />

Sure enough there was an incredible collection of Nativity Sets on display and called</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
"<b style="font-style: italic;">No Room at the Inn".</b> </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Admission was free, donations for the homeless of our area. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Nearly 100 nativity sets were arranged all around the Church interior, the little chapel and the parsonage next door. What a delight !!! How have we missed this other years? This is just a sample of what we enjoyed.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
All was surrounded by Christmas flowers. Each set had been donated by Church members. Out on the victorian porch a group of church members serenaded with their carols.</div>

The day after Thanksgiving…unseasonably cold here yesterday, but warmer today.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Perfect as today was downtown Amelia Island PJ party. It is always a hoot and a holler and no different this year. The sun was shining and smiles were everywhere. Also some neat music making…complete with our former mayor sporting pjs and his signature eye patch! </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Foot stomping' music, too, down by the harbor.</div>

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
After an unusual spate of rain and gloom, a hint of sun appeared yesterday. On the spur of the moment off we went on an off-island driving adventure. It was determined that we would head along the old road to St. Augustine. Not having been there for a good bit, and never taking our time, we set off to see what we could see. The sun managed to follow.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Going to St. Augustine, one thinks only of that historic town and not the fascinating nature path you can take to get there. Between the ocean and the intercoastal pathway lies one of the</div>

<br />
National Ocean and Atmospheric Agency partners with the National Spatial Reference Agency to protect and study this precious waterway that has been here since Native Americans called it home.<br />
Other researchers gather here as well to study this precious place, one of few estuaries left in the U.S.<br />
<br />
<br />
For us it was educational, but it was also peaceful. As you can see this pier was crowded with all kinds of wild life. We were not allowed to get closer but you can see from the silhouettes what they are. Across the bay there were nesting eagles one could see through a telescope.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Eventually we reached St. Augustine and lunch with a walk-about. Another of our destinations was the chapel of Our Lady of La Leche there in the city. Leche means milk in Spanish, and most are familiar with the La Leche league which promotes breast feeding for infants. The Catholic Chapel itself is named after the nurturing qualities of Our Lady. There has been a chapel here since the Spanish landed in 1565. This first mission in the U.S., the Mission Nombre de Dios, includes the Chapel which is visited by over 200,000 pilgrims a year. The site borders the river and is settled peacefully within groves of cedar and pine. Clusters of historic grave markers surround it. We found it a quiet and restful place to sit and pray after our long day. There are always so many things to pray for in our lives and also, for which to be thankful. </div>

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Halloween is a BIG DAY on the Island….this morning we headed downtown for the very special extravaganza. Every year on Halloween eve morning come herds of preschoolers and their parents or sitters. They have come to trick or treat all the shop owners who are often also in costume. It is a delight. We went by one two story brick building and the owners had lowered a rope with goodies in it for the kids. Everyone has a great time…you can see that from this little unicorn's delightful smile. We love it. Another of our Island traditions we try not to miss… My little red camera was busy, as I asked Moms and Dads if I could photograph. They all agreed and each child obliged with a smile, </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
it was a treat for the heart!</div>

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh6Y9c3KhbxcICfvmIPSCvZdW6pIf08VGkbw25uE7pXRm5Mi3I7DjKTq3JEuH9pNCgU4YtLnIXlMSFHsBNd05IAOMP5ul3Oe56rFl3r1z2h3F1IDtoA8pyNNbBdAxP4VIg5PN0pxDkHE1w/s1600/beautiful+sunset+.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh6Y9c3KhbxcICfvmIPSCvZdW6pIf08VGkbw25uE7pXRm5Mi3I7DjKTq3JEuH9pNCgU4YtLnIXlMSFHsBNd05IAOMP5ul3Oe56rFl3r1z2h3F1IDtoA8pyNNbBdAxP4VIg5PN0pxDkHE1w/s640/beautiful+sunset+.png" width="470" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Find yourself an island, inside or out. Everyone needs a place to go, to center, to appreciate. It does not have to be spectacular. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Well, we found one that is spectacular, in its own simple way. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Here on Amelia Island we found such a place. Now everyone knows it! This week in our local biweekly newspaper <i>The News Leader </i>we find out that we are #24 of 25 of the best Islands IN THE WORLD to visit!! This according to Conde Nast Traveler's Choice 2013. In the world, folks! For the seventh consecutive year it was also voted among the top ten U.S. Islands in the Reader's Choice Awards along with Maui and Kauai, Nantucket,MA and Hilton Head, S.C. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
As I may have said earlier in this blog, we are only 12 x 3 miles in size with two not very long bridges that connect us to the "mainland". Before we found Amelia, we had never heard of it. When we visited friends here, our connection, we fell in love. I guess a lot of other folks fall in love with it, too.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
We are always discovering new little corners. Just taking a short ride around or walking downtown or off the beaten path we get a sweet time-out.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I found this photo on Pinterest, it was not taken here. But, I love the spotlight effect on the sea...and it works for me! It tells the story pretty well. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
So where is your island?</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

One never knows what will be the surprise of a walk or drive to downtown Fernandina Beach. Today we actually found the beating heart of this Island we call home.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEieQkFhTxvBisA1GE1X9jAL22FDnwqJaS6xv3FsyrRkOFwqYtpEY8t9kI8MQ5OqDfM8KlxAGh93A8XadX2wyyLK-kBXNencz3eacX_wHbyc4zEtsBftqmOf-ok0SrUXDy_mVSojcbzl_LQ/s1600/boots+on+a+curve+.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEieQkFhTxvBisA1GE1X9jAL22FDnwqJaS6xv3FsyrRkOFwqYtpEY8t9kI8MQ5OqDfM8KlxAGh93A8XadX2wyyLK-kBXNencz3eacX_wHbyc4zEtsBftqmOf-ok0SrUXDy_mVSojcbzl_LQ/s640/boots+on+a+curve+.png" width="480" /></a></div>

<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi2OEBiwsmLFuL8IhO1kWA9ggcCqyh3t03DNVGtyJ3D4qim6X96zcrpY7qlUlEF209TACePWtu-ELUpMC3WAbC-ihsR5cSeR9_6-kLjh6r33QQanw0kWITSiw5JyprIyJCcooZgAswYBgU/s1600/fire+boots+.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi2OEBiwsmLFuL8IhO1kWA9ggcCqyh3t03DNVGtyJ3D4qim6X96zcrpY7qlUlEF209TACePWtu-ELUpMC3WAbC-ihsR5cSeR9_6-kLjh6r33QQanw0kWITSiw5JyprIyJCcooZgAswYBgU/s400/fire+boots+.png" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
We began to see the empty boots along the street curb, then more and more and more on both sides of the road from down at the beach to just before downtown proper, nearly two miles. Each boot had clipped to it the photo of an American fallen warrior whose life's blood was spent in defense of freedom along with his/her story. The boots were neatly placed with an American flag standing proud in each of them. It must have taken all night to set them in place.<br />
<br />
We fetched the camera and decided to stop near a gathering of people. There we discovered a young man who told us about what the boots meant. His is the back of the shirt you see here: he had tears in his eyes when he described how an Island mother of a fallen soldier had taken it upon herself to identify each soldier slain in the line of duty and attach it to a boot. He was running for the fallen from the Kings Bay military installation nearby which was part of the remembering day.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjMAcdi-znt-JuG1TzU9By0q507fz8vuHW-er7eeT90UbIas_9NfRjzXF2tNT6qU6-tB5xOCmWCrSmTVHhJG6AC45GwnAb7G8nEfLMEXUL2XAB7Mh2LJdqeLLZoXSJ1erz0EoqwiEbdanE/s1600/run+for+the+fallen+.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjMAcdi-znt-JuG1TzU9By0q507fz8vuHW-er7eeT90UbIas_9NfRjzXF2tNT6qU6-tB5xOCmWCrSmTVHhJG6AC45GwnAb7G8nEfLMEXUL2XAB7Mh2LJdqeLLZoXSJ1erz0EoqwiEbdanE/s320/run+for+the+fallen+.png" width="174" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
This woman has approximately twenty five hundred boots and photos thus far and her goal is 10,000: one for each casualty and soldier slain since 9-11. Some are only cards clipped to ropes as she has not yet been able to purchase all the boots. Further down in the exhibit were fireman's boots with identifying cards and flags as well. Her major goal is to take this all over the country.<br />
<br />
I cannot descibe the emotion this evoked in us. It further angered us that a callous government could actually close off open air monuments to our war dead here and abroad in a senseless lack of respect for the enormous amount of blood shed to keep us all free. We applaud the actions of WWII veterans to open the WWII memorial.<br />
<br />
Recently, a letter appeared in our local paper that the mother of a young serviceman from nearby Yullee<br />
had received. Her soldier son had written that if she received that letter it would mean he had fallen.<br />
Not to mourn said he, he had a wonderful mother. a wonderful life in a wonderful country. He was 23 years old.<br />
<br />
Makes one proud and so very small in the face of such heroism. <br />
<br />
Today we found the beating heart of an Island.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3180146443810758458.post-56698259141880508942013-10-14T08:08:00.001-07:002013-10-14T08:57:59.611-07:00From the mountains...to the ocean white with foam <br />
We have been away from our Island for a bit leaving the sea for the mountains. Specifically, Blowing Rock North Carolina. Traded in the heat of an Amelia summer for the coolness of the mountains, about 7 1/2 hours drive away.<br />
<br />
We left the sight of a beach sunrise in Amelia .....<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_5H7x0-K7eUzVXZtlmFwY9NXbt4X-8FdIaEU0hcigVbJD1lmH13GsiBcq-pAZlKsYw9jJKL-pZLMDF8RpZwCt1y2IYWqTFVGoQvMVJga0kZhWvkHOiKmF2gMCWrr2I4RmPJ5uQ85cops/s1600/best+beach+sunrise+.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_5H7x0-K7eUzVXZtlmFwY9NXbt4X-8FdIaEU0hcigVbJD1lmH13GsiBcq-pAZlKsYw9jJKL-pZLMDF8RpZwCt1y2IYWqTFVGoQvMVJga0kZhWvkHOiKmF2gMCWrr2I4RmPJ5uQ85cops/s640/best+beach+sunrise+.png" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
...for the beauty of sunrise in the mountains with its cloud rise as the forest exhaled its breath. This was the view from our deck in a lovely rented home. Different manifestations of the beauty of nature.<br />

As Americans we are blessed from sea to sea with bounteous vistas of all kinds where we find repose and peace from daily worries and work. Here in Amelia, we are not far from the mountains either in N. Carolina or Georgia or from ocean views. We both were born in southeastern New England, not far from New Hampshire mountains and not far from the ocean in Massachusetts and Rhode Island. We are grateful for all of the blessings of the past, present and our tomorrows. <br />
<br />
It is always good, though, to come home.....<br />

Consistent warm weather makes exercise a treat instead of a treatment. Hence, the sweet all-year climate of Amelia Island with its soothing sounds and sights of sand and sea are definite assets for a healing process.<br />

<br />
But, even if one lives in a little paradise, it is always well to wander off to other places.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
For us those places are high above our Amelia landscape. They reside in the mountains of North Carolina. It takes us about a 7 1/2 hour drive to get up to Blowing Rock, N.C. At least once a year, more if we need it, we drive all the way up to sights like these. We are blessed. The sounds of the sea and the immense silence of the mountains heal our hearts and souls in different but beautiful ways.<br />

Joseph Campbell said, "Follow Your Bliss." This is what we try to do. Sometimes we wander farther off, sometimes closer. But, no matter, Amelia is home. </div>

Even though the "Woods are lovely, dark and deep, we have promises to keep and miles to go before we sleep." Robert Frost, one of my favorite poets said it so well.</div>

<br />
We are most fortunate on the Island to be only 45 minutes away from one of the three Mayo Clinics in<br />
the country. It is located in Jacksonville. We usually take the ferry over to Mayport and eliminate about 26 miles one way. There is usually much less traffic and less boring highway. We like to stop in Neptune Beach for coffee, or for lunch at Lily's which is a charming little cafe sitting in the midst of a sweet courtyard bordering other shops. It is delightful to people watch, or even to chat with folks at the next table. Neptune Beach is right on the ocean and one block from Lily's you are on the sand of a beautiful beach.<br />
<br />
Mayo Clinic is a premier diagnostic center, now with its own hospital. It's campus is stunning. There are water gardens, meditation gardens as well as a non-denominational chapel which is pictured below.<br />
I took the photo of the chapel with my ipad camera. I was delighted to find that my icloud had worked and the photos were on iphoto on my Mac...a nice surprise. Experimentation is still the name of the game with my iPad. There are original pieces of stunning art everywhere at the Mayo. Some days one can find a volunteer artist playing a classical piece on a grand piano in one of the corridors (I would never call them halls , they are much more than that...rather galleries) Light flows in from huge windows with views of sculptures on green lawns. All to help the healing that takes place there. We<br />
primarily seek our medical care on the Island, but sometimes a complicated problem requires specialized help, so we come to the Mayo. It was surely a consideration when we moved here.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
At the Mayo all of the beauty, calm, and reassurance from friendly and professional staff means healers heal themselves as they heal others.</div>

<br /></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
The natural scene on islands have their own time schedules. Here there is a season for butterflies, another for dragon flies and another for hawks to name a few. The screee of hawks as they call from </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
tree to tree is unmistakable. Sometimes we will see a beauty up close and we have our treat for the day. The trees in our backyard seem to be a favorite haunt for them, or perhaps it is the naturalized garden </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
boasting of small animal life that attracts them. One of the more humorous sightings is when the squirrels decide to play tag with juvenile hawks in front of our back windows giving us a ringside seat. The squirrels know the hawks are too young to be a threat and are still learning to stalk. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The game is on!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
One day, I saw an article in our local paper about hawks with a photo of two of them in a birdbath.<br />
Well, we upped that one with this photo of three of them in our own birdbath. I sent it in and lo and behold it made the paper. Our Red Shouldered hawk trio were famous.<br />
